1. HMD Global Patent:
  • HMD Global, the Finnish company responsible for launching Nokia-branded smartphones in the market is the new owner of about 500 design patents.
  • Notably, Microsoft still has roughly 200 Nokia design with itself based on latest document by EUIPO incluidng PureView, ClearBlack, and PureMotion. The patent transfer was first reported by NokiaMob.
  • There are some news that  Nokia brand licensee HMD Global has lately been focusing a lot on the camera for its upcoming Nokia-phones.
  • HMD Global Gets 500 Nokia Design Patents From Microsoft, Including 'Lumia Camera UI'
  • The Lumia Camera UI could be another star in its armoury after HMD Global announced strategic partnership with Zeissded phones.
  • The interesting thing to note here is that one of the patents in these 500 design patents is for the design of Lumia Camera UI.
2. Lipizzan Spyware Detected:
  • Android users take note: spyware called Lipizzan has infected up to 100 devices and can monitor phone activity while extracting data from popular apps.
  • Lipizzan appeared on Google Play as an innocent-looking app with names like “Backup”, “Cleaner” and “Notes”.
  • Once Lipizzan gains full control of the infected device, it has the ability to record call, track the user's location, take screenshots and photos with the device's camera, fetch information and files stored in the device and other user information such as contact, call logs and more.
  • The most notable thing about the new spyware is how easily the authors can change the branding of the implanted apps.
3. Apple AR Glasses:
  • Apple has been rumored to be developing its own smart glasses
  • Now the company's AR firm Mataio has filed a patent for the technology
  • It shows the approach could be adapted to smartphone screens as well.
  • The patent was filed in April and just approved today.
It was the work of AR software development firm Metaio, which Apple acquired in May 2015 after it developed 'thermal touch' - a way to trigger actions in digital content via a person's heat signature.
4. Xiaomi Get $1 billion loan:
  • Chinese handset maker Xiaomi said it has secured a $1 billion loan to fund its global expansion plans and strengthen retail footprint.

  • Xiaomi founder, Chairman and CEO Lei Jun said “new retail” (an integration of online and offline retail) and globalisation are two of the company’s top strategic areas for development. “The syndicated loan will further boost its efforts to develop these areas,” he added.
  • Xiaomi, which is among the top smartphone players in Indian market, is eyeing sales of $2 billion at least this year, doubling its topline over last year.

  •  It is also aggressively looking at expanding its offline play in the country. In 2014, Xiaomi forayed into Indian market, selling smartphones online exclusively through Flipkart.
5. Anti Rape Sensor:

  • An Indian scientist at MIT has developed a sticker-like wearable sensor that can detect sexual assault in real time and quickly alert nearby people as well as the victim’s friends and family to seek help.
  • The sensor, which can be attached to any piece of clothing like a sticker, could be trained to learn the difference between when a person is undressing themselves and when they are being forcefully disrobed.
  • An integrated bluetooth connected to a smartphone app can trigger a loud noise to alert people nearby and send out a distress signals to pre-defined family members or emergency services
  • The sensor works in two modes. In passive mode, the wearer is assumed to be conscious and can set off loud alarms or distress calls on their own by touching a button when they encounter an approaching threat. In the active mode, the sensor tries to detect signals from the external environment.
  •  “We don’t need body guards, I think we should have the ability to protect ourselves,” said Mohan, MIT Scientist.

6. Moto Dashcam:

  • June last year Motorola had tied up with  its brand to British telecommunications company Binatone to launch a series of mobile accessories under the “Verve” brand.
  • Motorola VerveLoop does fall under your conventional mobile accessory category, the Motorola DASH CAM is more an accessory for your car, recording your trips and potential accidents, all without looking like an out of place action cam.
  • Cameras used to document events as they happen are becoming more common, from sports action cameras, to police body cams, to car dash cams. Not to be left out, the Motorola DASH CAM offers that same recording capability in a design that you won’t be ashamed to mount on your dashboard.
